Oporto là một di sản văn hoá thế giới của Portugal từ năm 1996. Đây là một thành phố xưa cũ, nằm trên cửa sông Douro, từ đó Bồ Đào Nha đã phát triển đội hàng hải thương thuyền đi nhiều nơi trên thế giới, khám phá, khai thác, chiếm làm thuộc địa trong nhiều thế kỷ..
Hai vợ chồng tôi đã sống một đêm tuyệt vời tại đây, đi tản bộ phố củ di sản văn hoá thế giới, đi du thuyền trên sông Douro, khi buổi tối thành phố vừa lên đèn, chạy ra tận cửa sông ngắm nhìn cảnh Đại Tây Dương, xa tít mù bên kia tận chân trời là thành phố New York và nước Mỹ nơi tôi đang sống. Sau chuyến đi cruise trên sông Douro, chúng tôi đã dừng chân ăn tối tại một quán cơm ở bờ sông, thưởng thức một vài món ăn lạ của Bồ Đào Nha, chưa bao giờ được ăn trong đời. Đi du lịch thật vui..
Đi cruise trên sông ở xứ người làm tôi nhớ lại những lần đi cruise trước đây trên sông Saigon và Cần Thơ, vừa ăn uống vừa thưởng thức âm nhạc quê hương. Tàu cruise khá lớn có hai ba tầng, mổi tầng có dàn nhạc khác nhau, thật là thú vị, hay hơn nhiều..
Lần đi cruise ở Huế, lênh đênh trên sông Hương thơ mộng, nghe mấy cô gái Huế hò hát những bài ca Huế đặc biệt, ánh trăng mơ màng trữ tình, thú vị hơn ở đây nhiều. Thế nhưng đi du lịch cũng có thú vui riêng. Một triết gia nào đó nói, làm người, tôi phải biết tất cả những gì liên hệ tới con người..

“Porto, also Oporto in English, is Portugal's second city and capital of the Norte NUTS II region. The city is located in the estuary of the Douro river in northern Portugal. The largest city in the region, Porto is considered the economic and cultural heart of the entire region. The city, which had an estimated population of about 220,000 (est.2008), lies at the centre of the political Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto, with a population of slightly more than 1.7 million (est. 2008), and is the main agglomeration of northern Portugal.
The city of Porto comprises 15 civil parishes. The historic centre of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, is named after the city because it is produced in, and shipped from the area. or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation.
The country was also named after the Latin name of Porto, Portus Cale. Porto district is one of the most industrialised districts in Portugal, and Maia, one of Porto's satellite cities, has the largest industrial park in Portugal...
In recent years, UNESCO recognised its historic centre as a World Heritage Site. Among the architectural highlights of the city, the Oporto Cathedral is the oldest surviving structure, together with the small romanesque Church of Cedofeita, the gothic Igreja de São Francisco (Church of Saint Francis), the remnants of the city walls and a few 15th-century houses.
The baroque style is well represented in the city in the elaborate gilt work interior decoration of the churches of St. Francis and St. Claire (Santa Clara), the churches of Mercy (Misericórida) and of the Clerics (Igreja dos Clérigos), the Episcopal Palace of Porto, and others.
The neoclassicism and romanticism of the 19th and 20th centuries also added interesting monuments to the landscape of the city, like the magnificent Stock Exchange Palace (Palácio da Bolsa), the Hospital of Saint Anthony, the Municipality, the buildings in the Liberdade Square and the Avenida dos Aliados, the tile-adorned São Bento Train Station and the gardens of the Crystal Palace (Palácio de Cristal). A guided visit to the Palácio da Bolsa, and in particular the Arab Room, is a major tourist attraction.
In 2001, Porto shared the designation European Culture Capital. In the scope of these events, the construction of the major concert hall space Casa da Música, designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, was initiated and finished in 2005.
Many of the city's oldest houses are at risk of collapsing. The population in Porto municipality dropped by nearly 100,000 since the 1980s, but the number of permanent residents in the outskirts and satellite towns has grown strongly.
Porto is ranked number 3 in the Portuguese most livable cities survey of living conditions published yearly by Expresso.”
